Thyroidectomy with LigaSure

Abstract: The application of LigaSure using meticulous surgical technique provides a new option for a safe thyroidectomy. Moreover, the duration of the LigaSure procedure is significantly shorter, and there are fewer complications as compared with the classic surgical thyroidectomy technique.

“…Although we did not perform a cost analysis, one might hypothesize that the documented savings of blood transfusions, operating time and suture material in pancreatic surgery compensate the costs of the ultrasonic dissection device. This has been well documented for thyroid [36][37][38] and colorectal surgery [10,11,29,39]. In addition, Gehrig et al [13] were able to show that in PPD resections the respective surgery-related costs tended to be lower (p = 0.23) in the LigaSure group (EUR 4,125) compared to the conventional group (EUR 4,931).…”

“…study. [ 14 ] Also, in the study by Turkay et al ., there was no case of postoperative bleeding in patients undergoing thyroidectomy with ligature; yet, there was one case of bleeding in patients operated with suture ligation. [ 11 ] These findings are consistent with ours.…”

“…[ 17 ] Furthermore, in the study by Milegniatovic et al ., the rate of damage to the efferent laryngeal nerve was 6.1% in the traditional surgery group and 35.4% in the ligature group. [ 14 ] The findings above indicate that the rates of damage to the efferent laryngeal nerve are different using various approaches. The temporary thermal damage due to ligature can increase the transient paralysis of efferent laryngeal nerve; yet, this damage is not permanent and is reversed up to 6 months after surgery.…”

“…5 In contrast, Harmonic employs ultrasonic energy to induce tissue friction at the cellular level, allowing proteins to denature and coagulate vessels up to 5 mm in diameter. 6 Recent analyses investigating thyroidectomy, 7,8 parotidectomy, 9 and neck dissection 10,11 have demonstrated reduced operating times in surgeries utilizing such devices. [10][11][12][13] These initial findings prompted immediate adoption into the field of otolaryngology, while more recent studies continue to evaluate surgical outcomes.…”
