Tidal bore progressing on a small slope

Abstract: In a natural estuary, a tidal bore may progress on a small sloping bed from the downstream to the upstream. In this study, a simple analytical solution for tidal bore formed in a small slope channel was developed using the finite control volume analysis. New unsteady experiments were conducted to verify the theoretical model. The model predictions generally agree with the observations. A general relation is obtained for the conjugate depth ratio as a function of the Froude number and the channel slope from the… Show more

“…Examples of these attractions include the Severn River Bore in UK, the Dordogne River Bore in France, and Qiantang River Bore in China. A tidal bore is a phenomenon caused by the leading edge of the incoming tide forming a wave of water that travels up a river or narrow bay against the prevailing current (Li, Pan, Chanson, & Pan, 2017). It can take many forms, varying from single breaking waterfronts with a roller like a hydraulic jump to large bores which comprises several rounds of waves (Chanson, 2011).…”

“…For example, Wang et al [79] studied the phenomenon of tidal bore-watching activities in China, which is a phenomenon caused by the leading edge of the incoming tide forming a wave of water that travels up a river or narrow bay against the prevailing current [80]. Regarding tide-watching, visitors tend to believe that it involves relatively low risk, because most people watch tidal bores by standing along the riverbank.…”

“…The tidal bore can be divided into undular and breaking bores. 13 The undular bore is a wave train that advances upstream of the estuary. When the intensity of the tidal bore is high, the surface breaks and then develops into a water roll that moves upstream.…”
