Hybrid pixel detectors (HPD) are nowadays well known and widely used in fundamental research, e.g. in high energy physics experiments. Over the last decade, segmented semiconductor detectors have also found use in medicine. The total doses received by medical radiation detectors often reach a significant level (up to several hundreds of kGy per decade), especially in applications such as transmission portal in-vivo dosimetry. Such doses might affect detector properties. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate their performance after absorbing a significant radiation dose. PantherPix is a novel 2D hybrid pixel detector which is designed specifically for use in radiation therapy. As was concluded in earlier studies, it is suitable for radiotherapy quality assurance (QA) and portal dosimetry. In this paper, the PantherPix radiation hardness is investigated using a 60Co source. The dependence on dose of the full depletion voltage, leakage current, detector power consumption and detector response are provided. The PantherPix radiation tolerance has been shown to be adequate for common cumulative doses delivered to radiation detectors in radiotherapy over several decades and its performance has been verified for doses up to 3000 kGy.

A: Monolithic pixel detectors often use an on-chip analog to digital converter (ADC) with successive approximation register (SAR) to digitize the signal amplitude of the pixels. This paper solves the challenges of column-parallel sampling with respect to the layout, power consumption, process variability, speed, and the integration of fully differential ADC architecture with ADC driver. To save power and area, a single column ADC digitizes the signals from two columns. A fully differential amplifier (ADC driver) is used to convert a single-ended signal from a pixel to the differential signal for driving the fully differential SAR ADC inputs. An implemented prototype occupies 445 × 115 µm 2 and achieves 4 MHz sampling frequency. The overall power consumption is 200 µW from a 1.8 V power supply at 10 frames per second readout frequency.

Radon detectors based on an electrostatic collection of polonium and detection of its alpha decay are a popular choice for the measurement of radon activity. Due to the nature of $^{222}$Rn decays, 88% of radon progeny have a positive charge, thus enabling their collection on an electrode. A simulation software focused on the drift and diffusion of ions in an electric field has been developed, providing a tool to study and characterise such detectors. It has been found that one such device achieves only 44% collection efficiency, caused by the loss of a large fraction of the ions before reaching the collection diode. An improvement of the design is therefore proposed, changing the placement of the sensor resulted in an simulated increase of the collection efficiency up to 93%. Preliminary measurements performed using prototypes of these detectors confirm the results of the simulations.
