Titanium Drill Pipe for Ultra-Deep and Deep Directional Drilling

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractThis paper discusses the modeling and analysis of 5, 5-1/2, 5-7/8 and 6-5/8 in. titanium drill pipe in ultra-deep and deep directional drilling programs. Using a computer based drill string simulator, modeling a representative deep directional well, titanium drill strings were compared to the same size steel drill strings using two design criteria: margin of overpull and hydraulic efficiency.

“…By comparing V150, Ti, S135 and G105, Xianbo Peng [17] found that titanium alloy drill pipe has the highest specific strength, and titanium alloy drill pipe still has significant fatigue life advantages under both single factor and multi-factor coupling. Jackie E. Smith [18] modeled titanium alloy drill pipe to analyze the performance of drill pipe in ultra-deep and deep directional drilling. According to laboratory tests, when the cyclic stress is between 30000psi and 40000psi, the fatigue life of titanium is 10 times greater than that of steel.…”

“…In drilling operations this is synonymous of a higher drill pipe distorsion in the wellbore and a buckling risk. A small number of theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted on the risk of buckling for steel, aluminium and titanium drill pipes (Smith et al 2 , Gelfgat et al 1,4 ,Akgun et al 5 ). In the following section we will discuss the drill pipe buckling studies and theory.…”

“…A larg part of these studies concentrated on the buckling phenomenon assuming steel drill pipes. Few studies (proposed by Gelfgat et al 1 & Smith et al 2 ) provided informations about buckling behavior of aluminum and titanium pipes. Today, materials such as aluminum or titanium are considered as viable options for drilling operations.…”

“…Grant Prideco, RTI Energy Systems, and Torch Drilling Services in the United States frst used titanium drilling pipes for industrial applications in 2000. In recent years, many scholars have carried out relevant research on titanium alloy drill pipes; Jackie et al [17] studied the processing method of titanium alloy drill pipes and used simulation technology to model and analyze titanium alloy drill pipe operation in ultradeep wells. Yang et al [18] tested the tensile, torsional, and internal pressure resistance of titanium alloy drill pipe, and the structure showed that the strength of a titanium alloy drill pipe was equivalent to that of a steel drill pipe.…”
