To Evaluate the Effectiveness of Maitland Technique in Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis in Female Patients

Abstract: Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of knee osteoarthritis treatment with Maitland technique over general exercises in aged female patients. Methodology A Cross sectional experimental study was performed on 80 osteoarthritic female patients of age between 45-60 years which were randomly selected from LNH. They were divided into 2 groups of 40 patients each. Group A received Maitland technique application while Group B received general knee ROM ex's. All participants have received 24… Show more

“…2010) analyzed five randomized, controlled studies comparing the effects of ultrasound and placebo on pain levels and function with a total of 341 osteoarthritis knee patients. In ultrasound there was a difference of 1.2 cm on the VAS scale of 10 cm compared to placebo ultrasound and also there was a significant increase in WOMAC score [8].…”

“…In addition, the strain effect can stimulate mechanoreceptors in joint capsules, where the activity of mechanoreceptors can block nociceptive impulses so that joint pain can decrease [8].…”

“…Improvement in outcome measure score may be explained due to improved circulation or pain gate mediated analgesia immediately following mobilization of the biomechanically impaired arthritic knee. Author study also reported that Maitland’s technique was effective in reducing the symptoms of knee OA 34 and realigning collagen, when specific movements stress the specific parts of the capsule Mechanical force applied during Maitland’s mobilization may lead to breaking up of adhesions. Maitland’s mobilization mainly consists of rhythmic oscillatory movements which stimulate the Type II dynamic mechanoreceptors and by this way can inhibit the Type IV nociceptive receptors.…”

“…The physical findings of Osteoarthritis of knee include: bony enlargement, crepitus, decreased range of motion, jointline tenderness, and pain on passive range of motion. (6) There are two terms of Mobilization and Manipulation, but they have the same meaning and can be changed. The variable speeds and amplitude can vary from a small-amplitude force applied at quick velocity to a big amplitude for ceappliedats low velocity, a continuum of intensities and velocity could be applied to the method.…”
