Tocopherol content and enzymatic antioxidant activities in chloroplasts from NaCl-stressed tomato plants

Abstract: Changes in tocopherol, chlorophyll and TBARS levels and the activities of antioxidant enzymes i.e., GSH-Px, GST, and SOD in chloroplasts of tomato plants subjected to moderate (50 mM) and severe (150 mM) NaCl stress were determined. Increase in tocopherol content around the second day under both stresses did not correlate with the chlorophyll degradation while such correlation was observed from the fifth day of severe stress. The activities of GSH-Px and GST as well as TBARS content showed NaCl-induced enhance… Show more

“…Tocopherols protect them against photo-oxidation by quenching and scavenging ROS and alkyl peroxy radicals generated during photosynthesis [ 43 , 44 ]. The protective effects of VTE include not only singlet oxygen scavenging but also a general protection of thylakoid membranes by tocopherol molecules in the lipid phase [ 45 ]. Loyola et al [ 44 ] demonstrated that α-tocopherol biosynthesis is part of the adaptation mechanisms to drought stress of Solanum chilense , a wild tomato genotype.…”

“…Superoxide dismutase activity is regarded as a kind of protective enzyme in the plant [32], and malondialdehyde is the product of cell membrane lipid peroxidation in plants [33]. Many studies have demonstrated that stresses, such as low temperature [31], low moisture [34] and high NaCl [35], could enhance the activity of superoxide dismutase activity to protect the cell from injury and death. Meanwhile, the malondialdehyde content of stressed plants was lower than those with no stress.…”

“…In chloroplast of tomato plants subject to moderate and severe salt stress, tocopherols appear to act as antioxidants under moderate stress and in the early phases of severe stress. However upon the last phases of severe stress, it has been suggested to be involved in senescence processes 15 . Furthermore, it has been shown that α-tocopherol levels were much higher in the halophyte Cakile maritima than in the glycophyte A. thaliana upon salt stress.…”
