Toward performance-based evaluation for offshore wind turbine jacket support structures

Abstract: This paper introduces a framework for the assessment of damage of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) supported by jackets under extreme environmental loadings. Performance levels/damage states, ranging from operational/undamaged to near collapse/severely damaged, are defined based on static pushover analyses. An example performance assessment is presented for an OWT supported by a jacket based on environmental conditions for a site off Massachusetts along U.S. Atlantic coast. The environmental conditions are charac… Show more

“…7, is the predicted three-hour significant wave height in meters, and is the 10minutes hub-height mean wind speed in / (10 minutes averaging is a standard assumption based on the observation that mean wind speed is approximately constant over this period of time). At the offshore Massachusetts site, hurricane conditions were estimated by Wei et al [39] by fitting a generalised extreme value (GEV) distribution to the output from a stochastic catalogue of simulated hurricanes over a 100,000 year period (typical length of stochastic catalogs in some probabilistic risk models). The GEV probability distribution ( ( | , , )) is defined:…”

“…Static pushover analyses were performed to obtain the critical displacement for the wind turbine. Wei et al [108] did a performance evaluation of a jacket-type OWT using a static pushover approach, as well. The environmental hazard models include extreme wave height and extreme speed.…”

“…Monopole, tripod, jacket structures, gravity-base, and suction caisson foundations have been widely used in the development of offshore wind powers [3]. Many experimental and numerical studies have been conducted on offshore wind turbines, such as the monopile [4], jacket support structure [5], tripod [6], and floating offshore wind turbines [7]. In recent years, a large number of offshore windfarms have already been installed, are under construction, or are being planned in China [8], and a new kind of suction foundation called composite bucket foundation for offshore wind turbines was proposed by Tianjin University [9][10][11][12].…”
