Towards a Quality Framework for Immersive Media Experiences: A Holistic Approach

Abstract: Immersive Media Technologies have emerged as popular media form. Their captivating nature makes them a powerful tool for participation and storytelling in a variety of domains attracting multidisciplinary interest. Existing frameworks for user-perceived quality in immersive media experiences are limited due to their exclusion of narrative dimensions. This research expands upon the current technology-centered Quality of Experience (QoE) framework by including Content Influence Factors based on learnings from ID… Show more

“…This was also expressed in writing by some subjects. The same possibility for action positively affected the level of engagement or involvement (p-value = 0.017) that directly correlates with the significance a user attaches to the stimuli or activity of the virtual environment [13,18]. This further alludes to the importance of affordances in creating opportunities for action inside IVEs [22].…”

“…Research indicates that merely a place illusion or spatial presence [8,[10][11][12] alone is not sufficient to sustain prolonged interest in virtual environments (VE). In fact, users also require motivation through involvement and engagement within these worlds for a heightened sense of selfpresence [13,14]. This could be a consequence of focusing one's energy and attention on the stimuli available in the virtual world, e.g., interaction possibilities, with which an involved a user experiences more presence [7,15].…”

“…The environment in which the user is before and during their VR immersion possesses situational properties that can alter their experience (Hameed et al 2019) (Fig. 11).…”

“…The delity and realism of graphics are particularly important in VR because of their effect on the users' sense of presence and immersion (Arora et al 2012; de França and Soares 2018; Hameed et al 2019). However, VR developers need to note that once a reasonable quality and realism of the graphics are achieved, computational times can be saved with little perceivable loss of quality.…”

“…Implying serious storytelling in training based VR simulations and investigating its effects on mediated presence and players' behavioral experiences is an exciting realm to investigate [2]. Comprehensive evaluation methodologies are required to model these factors by integrating them into immersive VRE [12]. So far, little research is done on assessing the impact of serious storytelling in VRE [22].…”
