Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Is Associated with Less Oxidative Stress and Faster Recovery of Antioxidant Capacity than Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement

Abstract: The objective of this study was to compare oxidative stress indices in 24 patients (mean ± SD age 71 ± 13 years) undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) versus transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), copper/zinc ratio (Cu/Zn), activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were assessed at four different time-points: pre-procedure, immediately post-procedure, and one day and two days after the procedure. Al… Show more

“…In oxidative stress, the rate of oxidation in the body exceeds the rate of anti-oxidation 26 , which eliminates peroxide or high-reactive oxygen molecules in the body, leading to peroxidative damage of organs and tissues 27 . Oxidative stress plays a key role in neuronal damage following cerebral ischemia.…”

“…Monitoring of platelets activity as well as their metabolic status is of importance after medical procedures with extensive iatrogenic tissue damage and systemic inflammatory response (SIRS). To assess the metabolic activity of platelets, we have chosen the content analysis of MDA, a product of thromboxane synthase and the marker of lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress and redox imbalance [17]. Oxidative stress altering platelets redox state may lead to their activation and eventually thrombus formation.…”

“…Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is the last resort in severe cases;the window of opportunity being limited for elderly frail patients as they represent the majority of concerned patients and, thus, it is not the most desirable option [ 4 , 7 , 92 ]. In the last decades, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) gained popularity as a more tolerable procedure with promising outcomes [ 48 , 93 , 94 , 95 ].…”
