Objetivo: Analisar a produção científica existente ao longo dos últimos dez anos, referente a atuação fisioterapêutica no puerpério imediato, e o que há de evidências para essa atuação. Métodos: Pesquisa de caráter exploratório do tipo bibliométrica, realizada por meio de uma revisão de literatura nas bases de dados PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, PEDro e LILACS, sobre a atuação fisioterapêutica no puerpério imediato publicada na última década. Utilizaram-se os descritores: “postpartum”; “puerperium” e “physiotherapy”. Resultados: De 814 publicações, apenas 17 foram analisadas após exclusão de determinadas produções, segundo critérios previamente definidos. Prevaleceram estudos quantitativos, na língua inglesa, realizados no Brasil, publicados nos últimos 5 anos, em periódicos com baixo fator de impacto SJR, que abordaram as temáticas de avaliação e tratamento da diástase dos músculos reto-abdominais (DMRA), seguido pelo uso da eletroestimulação transcutânea (TENS) para alívio da dor no pós-parto imediato e treinamento da musculatura do assoalho pélvico (TMAP). Conclusão: As evidências científicas encontradas apontam como principais intervenções fisioterapêuticas utilizadas no puerpério imediato os exercícios para DMRA, TMAP e TENS porém os estudos apresentam baixo rigor metodológico, e foram publicados em periódicos com baixo fator de impacto. Sugere-se a realização de novos estudos, com maior rigor metodológico, voltados apenas para mulheres no puerpério imediato, para produzir evidências científicas de melhor qualidade.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine the effect of progressive relaxation exercises (PRE) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation administered to women delivering via cesarean delivery on acute pain, breastfeeding success, and comfort levels.MethodsThis is a single‐blind, randomized controlled study. This study was carried out in the obstetrics and gynecology clinic of a university hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health in Turkey between August 20, 2018 and April 15, 2019. A total of 120 participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups, which included a transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS) group, a PRE group, a combined intervention group, and a control group. Data were collected with a Data Collection Form, The Visual Analogue Scale, The LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic Tool, and The Postpartum Comfort Scale.ResultsAccording to the findings of the study, it was determined that pain significantly decreased and comfort increased after having a cesarean delivery in all three intervention groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Regarding the breastfeeding success, while there was no statistically significant change in this behavior in the TENS group, it was significantly better in the PRE group and the combined intervention group, where TENS and PRE were administered together (p < 0.05).ConclusionsAccording to our study results, we recommend that TENS and PRE should be employed together after a cesarean delivery as safe non‐pharmacological methods in pain management, eliminating breastfeeding problems, and increasing comfort.

Background: There is evidence regarding beneficial use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on post Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) incision pain. However, efficacy of different types of TENS following C section pain has not yet been explored adequately.Methods: 96 women who had recently undergone LSCS were included for the study. The subjects were in the age group of 20 to 40 years (25.84±3.96); having pain intensity 4 or more on Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). They were divided into three groups by random allocation method; namely Group A: Acupuncture (Low/Motor) TENS, Group B: Conventional (High/Sensory) TENS and Group C: Control group. Group A and B received specific type of TENS twice a day for 15 minutes. Control group C did not receive any TENS intervention. All subjects received standard post-operative medications and physiotherapy. Pain intensity was recorded on NPRS pre and post intervention.Results: Both Acupuncture TENS and Conventional TENS significantly decreased post-operative pain intensity as compared to control group (p value <0.0001).Conclusions: Both, acupuncture and conventional TENS are equally effective in reducing post LSCS incision pain at a strong and non-painful intensity.
