Transmission potential and severity of COVID-19 in South Korea

Abstract: South Korea, the number of cases rapidly increased, resulting in 6,284 cases including 42 deaths as of March 6, 2020. To examine the growth rate of the outbreak, we aimed to present the first study to report the reproduction number of COVID-19 in South Korea. Methods:The daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Korea were extracted from publicly available sources. By using the empirical reporting delay distribution and simulating the generalized growth model, we estimated the effective reproduction number ba… Show more

“…Mass gatherings have been associated with increasing the transmission of the virus, creating high-risk conditions for the rapid global spread of infectious diseases [16]. For example, COVID-19 outbreaks were linked to several religious gathering clusters in Singapore [17,18], Malaysia [19] and South Korea [20][21][22]. It is therefore not surprising that for this year, most countries have cancelled religious activities, such as the cancellation of the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia [23].…”

“…Compared with SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 has the higher basic reproduction number, representing more transmissibility (Liu et al, 2020a). Within a very short period of time, COVID-19 has quickly become a very serious threat to travel, commerce, and human health in the worldwide (Bernard Stoecklin et al, 2020; Ghinai et al, 2020; Iacobucci, 2020; Shim et al, 2020; Tuite et al, 2020). By Mar.…”

“…Four months after the spread of the SARS COVID-19, its worldwide distribution remains extremely uneven. Lethality is even more inhomogeneous among and within countries, with figures of 12.6% in Italy 43 , and 0.6% in South Korea44 . Although differences in mortality might have various causes, including access and efficiency of health systems, total number of people tested, presence and severity of symptoms in tested populations, they are so impressive that it seems legitimate to search for other factors possibly related to individuals as the elements of a population.…”
