Transparent Ferroelectric Capacitors on Glass

Abstract: We deposited transparent ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate thin films on fused silica and contacted them via Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) transparent electrodes with an interdigitated electrode (IDE) design. These layers, together with a TiO2 buffer layer on the fused silica substrate, are highly transparent (>60% in the visible optical range). Fully crystallized Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) films are dielectrically functional and exhibit a typical ferroelectric polarization loop with a remanent polarization of 1… Show more

“…[ 12,13 ] Being an insulator with an optical gap of ≈3.4 eV, PZT is transparent. [ 14–16 ] However, integrating PZT‐based transparent actuators on glass is challenging. The main obstacles arise from the diffusion of Pb into the substrate, [ 17 ] relatively low strain‐points of typical commercial glasses (<500 °C for standard soda‐lime glasses), and the absence of crystallographic matching for {100} growth of PZT.…”

“…Randomly oriented 800‐nm‐thick PZT films with metal IDE electrodes showed ferroelectric response with a P r value of 20 µC cm −2 , which is comparable to standard values in MIM geometry on platinized silicon substrates. [ 15,32 ]…”

“…This simplifies the integration of transparent PZT on glass. Defay's group successfully employed this solution for realizing fully transparent functional frictionmodulation haptic device based on PZT and ITO films deposited on fused silica [7,19]. The main drawback of their technology is the high driving voltage required using IDE electrodes that can be detrimental for some applications.…”

“…In general, the electrode structures of SCs can be classified into three types: interdigital [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], sandwich [ 19 , 20 ], and roll [ 21 , 22 ]. In-plane interdigital design of electrodes possesses some advantages over the other two designs.…”
