Trends in the chemistry and technology of lipids

Abstract: A review is given of the annual world production of fats and oils and their increasing availability for edible and nonedible purposes. Trends in some important industrial processes (polymerization, metathesis, oxidation, etc.) are discussed and the applicability of fatty oils as specific and characteristic base materials for the organic chemical industry is compared with developments in the field of petroleum synthetics. To improve the position of fat-intermediates and fat derivatives on the world market, futu… Show more

“…The increased interest in the use of vegetable oil as a replacement for or extender of diesel fuel [7] might be due to the realization that fossil reserves could be exhausted or become shorter in supply and are not renewable. [8] Thus timely efforts directed at looking for alternative sources of food/feed and fats/oils among the less popular cultivars should be considered with renewed impetus.…”

“…The studied extract was characterized by a polyunsaturated/saturated (P/S) ratio of 0.44 inferior to that of olive oil (0.92). Oleic and linoleic acids are extremely important in nervous cell construction because they have fundamental role in cardiovascular diseases prevention …”

“…The oil contains high % of linoleic as seen in table 3.4 below and it is one of the most important essential polyunsaturated fatty acid in human food because of the inability of the body to synthesize it. It's present in the body prevents distinct heart vascular diseases in the body (Boelhouwer, 1983). …”
