“…In an outbreak of schistosomiasis in captive black brant (Branta bernicla) in Ontario, eggs were consistently found in the liver and kidney, where they elicited lesions varying from none to marked granulomatous reactions (Wojcjnski et al, 1987). Liver lesions associated with schistosome infections in waterfowl included fibroplasias of the portal triads, a mixed inflammatory infiltrate in portal areas, and periphlebitis of the portal vein (Pence & Rhodes, 1982)-a picture very consistent with our observations. Pence and Rhodes (1982) found schistosomes in the portal veins but no evidence of eggs in tissue.…”

“…Granulomas were also observed in the duodenum and small intestine of pigeons infected with Ornithobilharzia canaliculata (16). Three species of ducks infected with T. physellae showed no associated tissue reaction in the vicinity of adults located in mesenteric veins, but a granulomatous reaction around the eggs was detected occasionally in the mucosa and submucosa of the intestine (219). On the other hand, the most serious lesions and fibroplasia of the portal triads and adjacent parenchyma were observed in the livers of those ducks and were attributed to mature T. physellae (219).…”

“…Graczyk et al (1993) and Pence and Rhodes (1982) reported fatal schistosome infections in anatid birds caused by Trichobilharzia physellae in the USA. In Europe, Kolářová et al (2006) observed endophlebitis, inflammation of intestinal wall and also pathologies in the liver and lungs of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus) infected with A. visceralis.…”
