Tricholoma matsutake 1-Ocen-3-ol and methyl cinnamate repel mycophagous Proisotoma minuta (Collembola: Insecta)

Abstract: Two major volatiles produced by the mycelia and fruiting bodies of Tricholoma matsutake (1-octen-3-ol and methyl cinnamate) repel a mycophagous collembolan, Proisotoma minuta. Aggregation of the collembolans on their diet was significantly inhibited by exposure to 1 ppm methyl cinnamate or 10 to 100 ppm 1-octen-3-ol. The aggregation activity decreased dose-dependently upon exposure to 1-octen-3-ol at concentrations higher than 0.01 ppm. Aggregation in the presence of methyl cinnamate exhibited three phases: no… Show more

“…1-Octen-3-ol, sometimes called matsutake-ol, is associated with the flavor of mushrooms, and is widely distributed among the essential oils of Labiatae plants. This compound is reported to be a germination inhibitor for fungi [16], an insect attractant [17,18], and a ligand for bovine odorant-binding protein [19]. It has a linear structure consisting of eight carbons, analogous to the structure of linalool, whose sedative effects after single inhalation administration has been reported [20].…”

“…In our previous study, 1-octen-3-ol was found to be the most abundant volatile component in the prized edible mushroom Tricholoma matsutake 9 , which can protect T. matsutake fruiting bodies from mycophagous Proisotoma minuta 32 . Many studies have indicated a decrease of fungal communities in the T. matsutake fairy ring zone depending on the growth of T. matsutake 33 .…”

“…If one strand is cleaved, the super coils will relax to produce a slower-moving open circular form Form II . If both strands are cleaved, a linear form will be generated which migrates in between 19,32 . As shown in Fig.…”

“…They found that 1-octen-3-ol, a common fungal volatile produced by the activity of lipoxygenase enzymes [47,48], repels fungivorous springtails (small insect-like arthropods, Fig. 9.1e) [49] and has direct neurotoxic effects on Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies [50]. Nakamori and Suzuki [51] discuss the possibility that fungivore grazing causes wound-activated release of volatile organic compounds, which may play an important role in subsequent fungivore foraging decisions.…”
