Tricycloalternarene derivatives produced by an endophyte Alternaria alternata isolated from Maytenus hookeri

Abstract: A new tricycloalternarene derivative, named tricycloalternarenal (1), together with three known compounds was isolated from the cultures of Alternaria alternata, an endophytic fungus in the leaves of the plant Maytenus hooker! (Celastraceae). Structure of 1 was established as (2E)-6-(3, 3a, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9a-octahydro-5-hydroxy-3a-methyl-8-oxo-cyclo-penta[b]chromen-1-yl)-2-methylhept-2-enal by spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR experiments. The remaining compounds were determined as tricycloalternarene-3b… Show more

“…More recently, new compounds have been identified in fungal endophtes belonging to the genuses listed in Table 1. For example, a tricycloalternarene derivative was found in Alternaria (Qiao et al 2007), camptothecin in Neurospora (Rehman et al 2008), phomopsidone in Phomopsis (Martino et al 2007) and phomodione in Phoma (Hoffman et al 2008).…”

“…To complete the endophyte fungal characterisation, chemotaxonomy based on secondary metabolite profiles was employed. Metabolite profiling is a relevant tool for characterization of endophytic Alternaria spp., because they are supposed to produce chemically different and bioactive compounds (Quiao et al, 2007;Aly et al, 2008). The role of these compounds, e.g.…”

“…Tricycloalternarenes (TCAs) and their possible precursors, bicycloalternarenes, represent a large class of fungal‐derived meroterpenes, which are regarded as the products through hybrid mevalonate and shikimate pathways . Totally, more than 70 members have been isolated and identified so far, with TCAs accounting for over 70% . Most of the TCAs feature a ring system that is constructed by the fusion of a cyclohex‐2‐enonyl group and a cyclopentenyl/cyclopentyl group via a methylene group and an oxygen atom, and they have been obtained from some species of the genera Alternaria , Aspergillus , Guignardia , Pycnoporus , Septoria , and Ulocladium .…”
