Tropane Alkaloids of Datura innoxia from Morocco

Abstract: Fifty three alkaloids were identified in the organs (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds) of Datura innoxia by GC/MS. Seventeen of them are reported for the first time for this species and one nor-derivative, 3-phenylacetoxynortropane (28), for the genus Datura. Furthermore, four new tropane esters were tentatively identified as 3-acetoxy-6,7-epoxytropane (acetylscopine) (10), 3-acetoxy-6-propionyloxy-7-hydroxytropane (15), 6,7-dehydro- 3-phenylacetoxy tropane (25), and 3-(2´-phenylpropionyloxy)-6,7-epoxy… Show more

“…The cyclic tropane (+)-scopoline (110, Figure 10), also known as oscine, was first isolated from the genus Datura by Heusner in 1954 [124]. Since then, it has been observed in D. stramonium [68,72,74], D. inoxia [113,114], and D. wrightii [40]. A second cyclic tropane, cyclotropine (111), was observed in D. stramonium and D. inoxia [113,114].…”

A second cyclic tropane, cyclotropine (111), was observed in D. stramonium and D. inoxia [113,114]. Ionkova and Jenett-Siems propose that these compounds may be artificially produced during the isolation procedure (arising from degradation of epoxytropanes followed by intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the 3-hydroxyl on the epoxide), or during GC-MS, although both of these alkaloids were also observed by LC-MS during De-la-Cruz's profiling of D. stramonium leaves [61,75,122].…”

“…It is mainly distributed in the Himalayas, Kashmir region of Sikkim up to 2,700 meters, in the central district hills, and south of India [8, 12, 17]. In Morocco, datura is found in all warm and temperate regions [29]. …”

“…Quantitative and qualitative analysis had been applied for determination of tropane alkaloids in various Datura plant species using GC and GC/MS techniques. Recently, some investigation of Datura species using the GC/MS analysis demonstrate that it is the method of choice for a large number of tropane alkaloids which are not detected by other methods and are identified without using of standard compounds [16,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. On the other hand, GC/FID technique is much less applied for quantification of tropane alkaloids.…”
