Tropical inselbergs: habitat types, adaptive strategies and diversity patterns

Abstract: -(Tropical inselbergs: habitat types, adaptive strategies and diversity patterns). Inselbergs are isolated rock outcrops that rise abruptly above the surrounding plains. Granitic and gneissic inselbergs are geologically and geomorphologically old and occur throughout a broad spectrum of climatic zones. They form microclimatically and edaphically dry growth sites that support a highly specialized vegetation. Based on physiognomic criteria a number of habitat types can be distinguished that are widespread on ins… Show more

“…As these crusts are active in nitrogen fixation (Büdel et al, 2000(Büdel et al, , 2002(Büdel et al, , 2004Porembski, 2007), they probably facilitate succession by rock-dwelling communities, such as cushions dominated by lichens, bryophytes and monocotyledonous mats such as species of Trilepis Nees and Acianthera Scheidweiler. (Alves and Kolbek, 2000;Safford and Martinelli, 2000).…”

“…Inselbergs form isolated ecosystems possessing strong environmental filters (e.g., total or partial absence of soil, low water retention, nutrient scarcity, difficulty in affixing roots, exposure to wind and heat) that allow these areas to support a highly specialized flora with sometimes high levels of diversity and endemism (Larson et al 2000;Porembski & Barthlott 2000;Porembski 2007). Among the major regions recognized worldwide for this type of vegetation, southeastern Brazil stands out (Porembski 2007).…”

“…Granitic inselbergs are geologically and geomorphologically old, representing remnants left by erosion processes; they range in elevation from a few to several hundred meters (Coor et al 1993). Occurring over a broad spectrum of climatic zones (Porembski 2007), inselbergs have received considerable attention in recent years because they represent islands of high biotic diversity (Burke 2001). Such areas support a variety of microhabitats, each with its own distinct community (Porembski et al 2000).…”
