True mangrove species of Sundarbans Delta, West Bengal, eastern India

Abstract: Varied opinions exist as to the species composition and ecological distinction of mangrove habitats of the Indian Sundarbans. Furthermore, distinction of true or major mangroves from mangrove-associate and minor species was left unresolved by past authors. The present study thus aimed to revise a species list of true mangroves in the Indian Sundarbans delta. An indexing of adaptive morpho-physiological characters of mangroves for the tidal-saline environment was conducted. The analysis illustrated 24 species o… Show more

“…Relatively, this number is higher than that recently reported by Widyastuti et al (2018) for mangrove in Segara Anakan, Central Java, Indonesia, and also reported by Cañizares and Seronay (2016) for the mangrove richness in Barangay Imelda, Dinagat Island, Philippines. The number of 21 species as biological wealth of true mangrove species in North Gorontalo is almost comparable with that reported by Barik and Chowdhury (2014) for diversity in the Sundarbans Delta, West Bengal, Eastern India, and also that reported by Wouthuyzen and Ahmad (2018) in the Lease Islands (Saparua and Nusalaut Islands), Maluku Province, Indonesia.…”

“…The Sundarban mangroves belong floristically to the Indo-Andaman mangrove province within the species-rich Indo-West Pacific group [26]. According to [27], 24 true mangrove taxa belonging to nine different families are found within the Indian Sundarbans. Several species are endemic such as Aegialitis rotundifolia, Heritiera fomes, Sonneratia apetala or S. griffithii.…”

“…Halophytic species, even though they grow in high saline soils and exhibit succulence, resort to various other physiological adaptations to overcome the adverse effect of salt stress. Apart from the Indian arid zone, Indian shorelines are essential habitats of some Indian halophytes and mangrove vegetation (Barik and Chowdhury 2014) . The Gulf of Kachchh in Gujarat, a semi-enclosed coastal region, is predominantly inhabited by mangrove ecosystems, coral reefs, abundant marine diversity, and terrestrial riparian vegetation.…”
