Trypanocidal activity of polysaccharide extract from Genipa americana leaves

Abstract: GaEPL showed significant activity against the epimastigote, trypomastigote and amastigote forms of T. cruzi, strain Y, suggesting cell death by necrosis with involvement of reactive oxygen species.

“…The leaves have anticonvulsive (Nonato et al, 2018), antimalarial (Deharo et al, 2001) and trypanocidal properties (Souza et al, 2018). Phenolic extracts of fruits have the ability to inhibit the proliferation of cells responsible for human hepatocarcinoma (Finco and Groeve, 2013).…”

“…[28] There is no previous study on the trypanocidal activity of this EO; however, the T. riparia methanol extract has been evaluated against T. cruzi trypomastigotes, T. brucei trypomastigotes, and L. infantum promastigotes, giving IC 50 values of 33.2, 8.1, and 20.3 μg mL À 1 , respectively. [29,30] It is important to determine the EO cytotoxic potential when searching for chemotherapeutic alternatives. [31] Natural products with CC 50 (concentration cytotoxic to 50 % of the cells) values lower than 100 μg mL À 1 , between 100 and 500 μg mL À 1 , between 500 and 1000 μg mL À 1 , and higher than 1000 μg mL À 1 are strongly cytotoxic, moderately cytotoxic, weakly cytotoxic, and not cytotoxic to mammalian cells, respectively.…”

“…The polysaccharide extract of G. americana showed activity against all main forms of a benznidazole-resistant T. cruzi strain, suggesting a necrotic pathway with ROS involvement. Therefore, GaEPL can be a source of substances against Chagas disease (Souza et al 2018). In this work, we evaluated two arabinogalactan-glycoconjugate fractions of this extract.…”

“…Recently, we demonstrated trypanocidal action of a polysaccharide extract from G. americana leaves against a benznidazole-resistant strain of T. cruzi (Souza et al 2018). Two arabinogalactan-glycoconjugates from this extract were separated and characterized, being mainly composed of arabinose, galactose, and uronic acid.…”
