Tuber transmission of ‘Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum’ and its association with zebra chip on potato in New Zealand

Abstract: Zebra chip, an emerging disease of potatoes, has recently been associated with 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' in New Zealand. The phloem-limited bacterium is known to be vectored by the tomato potato psyllid (Bactericera cockerelli). In this study, the role of tuber transmission in the spread of Ca. L. solanacearum was investigated by replanting potato tubers infected with Ca. L. solanacearum in the absence of the psyllid. Nested PCR demonstrated that Ca. L. solanacearum could be transmitted from the m… Show more

“…CaLso is transmitted from potato mother tubers to growing plants and to progeny tubers (Pitman et al, 2011) and is a carrot seed borne pathogen , which poses a high risk of introduction of the bacterium into new areas in which contaminated carrot seeds are commercialized. The bacterium is also horizontally and naturally spread by different psyllid species (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) following establishment (Hansen et al, 2008;Alfaro-Fernández et al, 2012;Nissinen et al, 2014).…”

“…However, the metabolic cost of the copy number may play a role as evidenced by apparently low titre in plant hosts during periods of low growth but higher titre during growth flushes of citrus [50,51] or after storage in seed tubers of potatoes [52,53]. An extreme of survival in root systems, even after the tree has been killed [54], indicates the potential for long term survival even in a dormant host.…”

“…When infected with CLs, the bacteria spread throughout the plant and can infect daughter tubers. Because of this, to prevent the spread the disease, it is necessary to destroy an entire crop where zebra chip is found (Pitman et al 2010).…”
