Tucumã oil (Astrocaryum vulgare) ameliorates hepatic antioxidant defense system in alloxan-induced diabetic mice

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate whether treatment with Astrocaryum vulgare oil (tucumã oil), a hypoglycemic natural compound, was able to reduce hepatic oxidative stress of diabetic mice. An increase in lipid peroxidation and decrease in catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities, as well as glutathione reductase (GSH) levels were observed in diabetic/water group. Treatment with tucumã oil prevented lipid peroxidation and in… Show more

“…Another study also showed that TPP oil might prevent changes in serum enzymes of the purinergic system, resulting in an improvement of the immune system [196]. Furthermore, TPP oil showed its effectiveness in the hepatoprotection against lipid oxidative damage and in the prevention of lipid peroxidation in hepatic tissue [197]. Antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activities in alloxan-induced diabetic mice were also reported [160].…”

“…Carotenoids are known as lipophilic substances with bioactive properties in the prevention of several types of cancer (Rowles and Erdman, 2020). Other studies investigated the constituents and health effects of oil and extracts of tucumã, demonstrating its antimicrobial and anti‐inflammatory properties (Baldissera et al ., 2018; Cabral et al ., 2020; Ongaratto et al ., 2020; Rossato et al ., 2020). These findings highlight the potential benefic effects on human health and nutrition by the intake of tucumã fruit and its oil.…”
