TunnelScatter

Abstract: Due to extremely low power consumption, backscatter has become the transmission mechanism of choice for batteryfree devices that operate on harvested energy. However, a limitation of recent backscatter systems is that the communication range scales with the strength of the ambient carrier signal (ACS). This means that to achieve a long range, a backscatter tag needs to reflect a strong ACS, which in practice means that it needs to be close to an ACS emitter. We present TunnelScatter, a mechanism that overcomes… Show more

“…Therefore, we here use a binary template cross correlation technique. Previous research has also proposed ADC elimination for passive, low power, backscatter communication and sensing [18]- [20]. These systems replace the functionality of the ADC by introducing comparators, adapting the transimpedance of a JFET or translating the voltage resolution to the time domain as a PWM signal.…”

“…In further research the power consumption can be drastically reduced by minimizing the listening state of the mobile node. A potential solution can be found in RF backscattering [18]- [20], where passive wireless communication at the receiver side is possible. A more in-depth study is needed to test the feasibility of such techniques.…”

“…We overcome this challenge by building on recent low-power visible light systems that have used a comparator coupled with a low pass filter as thresholding circuit for communication [36,89] and sensing [91,92]. We build on these designs and demonstrate it can enable downlink LiFi communication even while operating on the harvested energy from a solar cell.…”

“…Inspired by recent innovations [4,50], we employ tunnel diode as a core component to build up the RF front-end of our low-power backscatter tag to achieve amplification with 𝜇𝑊 -level power consumption. Previous designs create carrier wave [50] or modulate their bits on incident signals [51] by employing a tunnel diode oscillator (TDO). However, our design target is completely different: we aim to carefully strengthen weak GPS signals according to regulations while preserving the original GPS waveforms with high fidelity to ensure correct decoding on smartphones.…”
