Turnover Rates and Diet–Tissue Discrimination Factors of Nitrogen and Carbon Stable Isotopes in Seahorse Hippocampus reidi Juveniles Following a Laboratory Diet Shift

Abstract: The initial development of seahorse juveniles is characterized by low digestion capabilities. Stable isotope analysis is an effective tool in studies of trophic food webs and animal feeding patterns. The present study provides new insights for the understanding of growth and food assimilation in early developing seahorses following a laboratory diet switch. The study was performed in the early life stages of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi by assessing the influence of diet shift on changes and turnovers in car… Show more

“…The invertebrate samples were divided into Early Season (May-July) and Late Season (August-October) because zooplankton isotopic turnover is a few weeks (Emery et al, 2015) -zooplankton tissues reflect consumption from 1 to 2 weeks before collection. Isotopic turnover for juvenile fish, however, is from 1 to 3 months (Oliveira et al, 2017;Hernández-Urcera et al, 2022), and this time lag between consumption and consumer isotopic assimilation must be considered in the models for more reliable results (Vander Zanden and Rasmussen, 2001;Hussey et al, 2014;Lanari et al, 2021;Possamai et al, 2021).…”

“…This result is in agreement with the low digestion capability in seahorse juveniles. The study by Hernández-Urcera et al [ 12 ] provided new insights into the understanding of growth and food assimilation in H. reidi juveniles following a laboratory diet switch. This study highlighted the relevance of feeding on copepods and their effect on isotopic patterns and discrimination factors in seahorse juveniles after a dietary shift.…”
