Two Actinobacillus species isolated from laboratory rodents

Abstract: A study was made of the cultural and biochemical characteristics of 17 strains of Actinobacillus isolated from laboratory rats and hamsters. 2 types were recognized which differed in their urease reaction and colony colour on blood agar. The results obtained suggest that one was Actinobacillus equuli but the other could not be identified as belonging to a described species. The characteristics of both organisms are such that they could be confused with Pasteurella pneumotropica. One of the types was isolated f… Show more

“…Reports claiming to have found members of the HPA-complex in other animals than where they are expected should be questioned, especially if unsatisfactory means of identification have been used or lack of information makes it impossible to check on what grounds the identifications were based. Even recent publications may lack sufficient information to allow an evaluation of the species in question (1,7,9,15,16,20,30).…”

“…(4) Finally, a group of isolates labelled "Avian INTRODUCTION In the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names (Skerman et al, 1980) five species of the genus Actinobacillus Brumpt 1910 and six species of Pasteurella Trevisan 1887 were recognised. Several other named or unnamed Pasteurella or Actinobacillus species were not included in the Lists, or have been described afterwards (Simpson and Simmons, 1980;Friis-M^ller, 1981;Frederiksen, 1981;Bisgaard, 1982;Snipes and Biberstein, 1982;Bisgaard et al, 1983;Boot et al, 1983;Pohl et al, 1983). According to Biberstèin (1981) the species constituting the genera Pasteurella and Actinobacillus represent a biotypic continuum of many intergrading forms with no dependable boundaries between species and even genera.…”

“…Stewart & Letscher (1976) (Arseculeratne, 1962). Simpson & Simmons (1980) reported the recovery of 2 types of Actinobacillus from nasopharyngeal washings and caecal contents of healthy Syrian hamsters, Chinese hamsters and rats, whereas only I isolate was recovered from a pouch abscess in a Chinese hamster. A. equuli and A. lignieresii were isolated from healthy guineapigs, rats and mice by Lentsch & Wagner (I 980), mostly from the nasopharynx.…”

“…Our isolates differ in up to 3 fermentation reactions from the various Actinobacillus spp. (Lentsch & Wagner, 1980;Arseculeratne, 1962;Simpson & Simmons, 1980) and Pasteurella-like organisms (Stewart & Letscher, 1976;Mannheim et at., 1978) isolated previously from laboratory animals and the chicken-isolates reported by Hall et al (1955).…”
