Ultrasonic Scanning to Observe Wetting and “Unwetting” in Li-Ion Pouch Cells

Abstract: An ultrasonic imaging technique has been developed to investigate the internal changes of pouch cells nondestructively. The local ultrasonic transmittance of pouch cells has been measured and used for imaging with a new ultrasonic scanning machine designed and built in-house. The wetting process of the cells is clearly observed via such ultrasonic imaging techniques. Furthermore, ultrasonic transmission images of fresh cells and aged cells with different electrolytes and cycling conditions exhibit very differe… Show more

“… Quality control is an important step run through almost all the LIB manufacturing steps. The characterization methods can help to detect the defects early and prevent waste in the following steps ( Deng et al., 2020 ). However, it is hard to estimate the QC fail rate for the manufacturing innovations.…”

“…To achieve a lower cost and better visualization, Deng et al. applied ultrasonic scanning to observe the electrolyte distribution during the formation and aging process ( Deng et al., 2020 ). Depending on the characterization ability of gas generation by the ultrasonic scanning, they discovered that higher formation and aging temperature could exacerbate the electrolyte decomposition and lead to excessive SEI growth.…”

“…[ 25 ] To investigate the gassing behavior of LMBs, we carried out ultrasonic transmission mapping using the ultrasonic imaging technique developed by our group. [ 26 ] LFP/Li pouch cell was used for scanning since LFP cathode is usually very stable with no gas generation. The gassing mainly arises from the decomposition of electrolyte on Li anode, and it can be observed from the change in ultrasonic transmissivity.…”

“…Finally, ultrasonic scanning technique developed by our group is performed to monitor the gas generation process inside pouch cells. [ 24 ] The transmitted ultrasonic signal is significantly reduced at gas–liquid or gas–solid interfaces due to the enlarged interfacial impedance. The ultrasonic transmission is transformed into a red‐to‐blue heat map, and low transmission, represented by the blue color, indicates gassing behavior.…”
