Ultrasound biomicroscopy of the Artisan phakic intraocular lens in hyperopic eyes

Abstract: Adequate space was maintained between the Artisan hyperopic IOL and the corneal endothelium, angle, and crystalline lens. Haptic indentation of the iris, which could lead to pigment erosion, was observed. Preoperative gonioscopy and maintenance of normal intraocular pressure postoperatively suggest the indentation was secondary to inadequate lens vaulting relative to the high natural arch of the iris in hyperopic eyes. Shortening the haptics or increasing the lens vault might resolve this problem.

“…This is consistent with biomicroscopic findings of Pop et al, 24 who evaluated the distance between rigid Artisan pIOLs and the corneal endothelium. These findings are comparable to the results in our patients with the foldable IOL with the new design.…”

“…14 Furthermore, the original ACD has been reported to reduce by 28% to 34% after implantation. 15 In our patient, the postoperative ACD was 2.46 mm (decrease of 15%) in the right eye and 2.30 mm (decrease of 18%) in the left eye. In a young patient with minimal zonular laxity, no phacodonesis or IOL decentration, and an appropriate ACD, irisfixated IOL implantation may be an alternative to more invasive and complicated procedures.…”

“…Pop et al 20,26 used UBM to study the anatomical characteristics of the Artisan IOL in hyperopic patients (n Z 4) and myopic patients (n Z 3). The ACD decreased by 28% to 34% and from 2.03 to 2.54 mm after IOL implantation.…”
