Ultrasound evaluation of the mechanical properties as an investigation tool for the wood-polymer composites including olive wood flour

Abstract: This paper presents results obtained for the development of a wood-polymer composite (WPC) based on polypropylene (PP) reinforced by olive wood fibers (OWF). The effect of the wood flour content and its chemical fiber treatment (amino-silane) on the mechanical properties of the WPC was studied by ultrasonic methods and mechanical tensile test. The elastic properties of the studied PP/OWF compositions are discussed and both of the mentioned evaluations give similar tendencies even if the characterization method… Show more

“…For determination of elastic constants (Young's modulus, Bulk Modulus, Poisson's ratio, Longitudinal Modulus, and Shear Modulus), acoustic impedance, ultrasonic micro‐hardness and grain size, and so forth the quantities should be measured in UT are only ultrasonic wave velocity values (longitudinal wave velocity and shear wave velocity), and attenuation coefficient 38 . UT has been widely carried out in the measurement of isotropic materials' physical properties (elastic constants, microstructural, diffuse discontinuity, and mechanical properties), 41,42,37,43 and the characterization of internal damages, defects, and discontinuities in materials 44–47 . For example, El‐Sabbagh, et al 44 investigated the effect of the natural fiber content on the ultrasound velocity in a composite material.…”

“…If the specimen is self-extinguished or incombustible in the horizontal burning test, then it is subjected to the vertical burning test. Class of the sample was determined by the sample dripping, its burning state, and combustion time [266,267]. From all the above discussions, it could be stated that the fire retardancy of WPCs was improved by the addition of materials promoting fire resistance.…”

“…[22] One of the current research subjects concerns the experimental determinations and the theoretical calculations of elastic properties of composites, related with their morphology and their phase properties. [23,24] Nondestructive testing (NDT) by ultrasound can be used for the determination of different elastic properties (Young's modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, longitudinal modulus, acoustic impedance, Poisson's ratio, etc.). In the literature, some studies have focused on the ultrasonic characterization of epoxy matrix composites loaded with particulate reinforcements or powders such as biochar, [25] andesite waste, [26] polyethylene terephthalate carbon powder, [27] and olive stone flour.…”
