“…7,[9][10][11][12] Although results vary from study to study, it appears that the application of heat to a tumor may in fact promote growth of any live tumor cells that are left behind. In a recent study involving implantation of ascites-derived hepatoma cells into rat liver followed by microwave coagulation 5 days later, the tumor weight of the microwave-treated rats was twice that of control rats.…”

“…As a result, the temperature at points 5 and 10 mm away from the microwave electrode reached its highest level of 84 ± 3.3 °C (5-mm distance), and 55 ± 1.6 °C (10-mm distance) after 30 s irradiation. The temperature at 5 mm away from the electrode could be maintained higher than 60 ° C for 60 s following the completion of microwave irradiation [9], Furthermore, we have confirmed that complete coagula tion necrosis was obtained in this high-temperature area, and that no significant elevation of temperature could be observed 2 cm distant from the electrode [9], Concerning the anticancer effects for implanted renal tumors, our study showed that the survival rate in the laparoscopic microwave thermotherapy group was signifi cant and the same as that in the nephrectomy group. This satisfactory result is supported by both the histological evaluation that the implanted VX-2 cells were completely eradicated and the fact that no metastasis of other organs was observed following laparoscopic microwave thermo therapy.…”

“…We previously examined both thermome try and histology when microwaves at 100 W for 30 s were irradiated to the normal rabbit kidney [9]. As a result, the temperature at points 5 and 10 mm away from the microwave electrode reached its highest level of 84 ± 3.3 °C (5-mm distance), and 55 ± 1.6 °C (10-mm distance) after 30 s irradiation.…”

“…62 For surgical therapy, the microwaves are emitted from a flexible antenna. Microwave energy can be used for coagulation as well as ablation; it has been employed for hemostasis in open 63 and laparoscopic [64][65][66][67] partial nephrectomies. The flexibility of the microwave antenna and the coagulative nature of thermotherapy make the approach ideal for renal ablation.…”

“…The initial studies demonstrated the ability of MT to cause coagulative necrosis 5 mm from the electrode; temperatures .60°C were routinely recorded. 63 Furthermore, there was no significant elevation of temperature 2 cm from the electrode. Later studies of percutaneous ultrasound-guided treatment of implanted VX-2 carcinoma with MT confirmed the effectiveness of this modality.…”
