Unculturable and culturable periodontal-related bacteria are associated with periodontal inflammation during pregnancy and with preterm low birth weight delivery

Abstract: Recent studies revealed culturable periodontal keystone pathogens are associated with preterm low birth weight (PLBW). However, the oral microbiome is also comprised of hundreds of ‘culture-difficult’ or ‘not-yet-culturable’ bacterial species. To explore the potential role of unculturable and culturable periodontitis-related bacteria in preterm low birth weight (PLBW) delivery, we recruited 90 pregnant women in this prospective study. Periodontal parameters, including pocket probing depth, bleeding on probing,… Show more

“…Because the plating method can only reveal culturable bacteria [50,51], metagenomic analysis was performed to investigate the entire spectrum of the bacteria population in the infected zebrafish gills. The relative abundance (% relative to the total) of the bacteria populations was analyzed in specific hypervariable regions of 16S ribosomal RNA through new-generation sequencing analyses (Fig 4 and S2 Fig in S1 Data).…”

“…human oral taxon 360 in the oral microbiome were positively correlated with gingival inflammation during pregnancy. 18,25,26 On the other hand, the level of Rothia dentocariosa in saliva was negatively related with gingival inflammation during pregnancy. 26…”

“…It is worthwhile to point out that the impact of the oral microbiome extends beyond the oral cavity and oral cancer. Oral microbes can affect coronary artery disease [ 190 , 191 ], preterm delivery of low‐birthweight neonates [ 192 ], Alzheimer's disease [ 193 ], and rheumatoid arthritis [ 182 ].…”
