Critical realism, as expounded by Bhaskar, is a philosophy of social science that has been applied in social work scholarship addressing such areas as research methodology, practice interventions and programme evaluation. Most of these applications are based on the early rendition of the philosophy, with little attention given to Bhaskar’s later, more mature, development of dialectical critical realism. This article addresses this gap, describing how dialectic critical realism builds on the early iteration of the philosophy to account for emancipatory change in the social world. The contribution of dialectical critical realism to anti-oppressive social work is then considered through the articulation of six, interlinked steps of transformative change. Finally, the preceding meta-theoretical steps are applied to a fictitious case example involving a young person leaving care. The aim here is to show how the steps can be integrated within social work practice to stimulate positive change, human emancipation and well-being.

El acompañamiento de los jóvenes tutelados y extutelados en su transición a la vida adulta se considera fundamental para mejorar sus posibilidades de éxito. En España la Ley 26/2015 establece que se deben adoptar medidas para fomentar los procesos de emancipación de este colectivo. Dichas medidas se concretan en recursos de apoyo a la transición que gestionan de manera autónoma cada una de las comunidades, siguiendo también las directrices de las leyes autonómicas correspondientes. En este estudio se comparan los recursos de apoyo existentes en Andalucía y Cataluña a través de la investigación comparativa. Se han analizado informes, memorias y legislación, entre otros documentos, y se ha contrastado la información obtenida a través de 19 entrevistas semiestructuradas a informantes clave. Los resultados muestran que Cataluña se caracteriza por ofrecer a los jóvenes mayor apoyo económico y de vivienda, mientras que Andalucía pone el foco en el acompañamiento a la inserción sociolaboral. Se plantea la necesidad de revisar las políticas, estrategias y recursos de atención a este colectivo con la finalidad de responder a los diferentes perfiles y necesidades de los jóvenes, así como realizar una recogida sistemática de información para poder aportar evidencias empíricas para la mejora de los recursos.

The transition period from care to independent living is a vulnerable time for care leavers who may experience increased mental health problems. This study explored risk and protective factors contributing to and predicting their psychological distress as emerging adults. The study is based on an extensive set of longitudinal administrative records combined with structured phone interviews among a representative sample of 2295 alumni of educational residential care in Israel (24–31 years old). Results indicated the importance of social support from peers and staff while in and after care in predicting lower psychological distress among the young adults. Participating in skills acquisition activities while in care and integration in post‐secondary education also predicted lower psychological distress. In contrast, post‐care material deprivation and lower life satisfaction in the area of finance and work were associated with greater psychological distress. Both the subjective experiences and the objective conditions thus contribute to care leavers' mental health. Our results indicate the importance for policy and practice of approaching mental health issues in a holistic manner.
