Undifferentiated carcinoma of the gallbladder with endothelial differentiation: A case report and literature review

Abstract: Abstract. Undifferentiated carcinoma of the gallbladder is a rare cancer type with a poor prognosis. The present study described a case of undifferentiated gallbladder carcinoma of the spindle-and giant-cell type, according to the 2010 World Health Organization classification. Hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed that the tumor consisted of dense interlacing bundles of spindle-shaped cells. No evidence of cartilaginous, osseous or rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation was observed. Immunohistochemical staini… Show more

“…12 The eventual unsatisfactory outcome suggests that this tumor's aggressive activity is consistent with that observed in previously documented cases. 13,14 This shows that comprehensive adjuvant therapy should be researched to increase survival in individuals with advanced undifferentiated gallbladder cancer, because surgery alone may not be sufficient. For SWI/SNF-deficient malignancies, the EZH2 inhibitor tazemetostat has become a popular targeted therapy.…”

“…Carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder is called “undifferentiated carcinoma”, “sarcomatoid carcinoma,” or “spindle-cell carcinoma.” Thus, the terminology has not yet been unified( 13 ). The pathogenesis of gallbladder carcinosarcoma remains poorly known.…”

“…If, however, a tumor is “solitary type”, surgical resection might lead to a good prognosis, as in the present case. However, in general, undifferentiated carcinoma of the digestive system seems to have a poor prognosis [ [7] , [8] , [9] , [10] ]. Therefore, multimodal therapy should also be considered.…”
