Uniform and Reliable Dip-Coated Conjugated Polymers for Organic Transistors as Obtained by Solvent Vapor Annealing

Abstract: Dip-coating is a useful technique to prepare a thin film of an organic semiconductor; however, achieving homogeneous film properties is sometimes challenging because of the experimental configuration of dip-coating under the strong influence of solvent vapor. In this work, we studied the effect of solvent vapor on dip-coated film uniformity during the dip-coating process. We demonstrate that solvent vapor released from the solution reservoir strongly affects film crystallinity at each relative position in the … Show more

“…Some of the solution processed deposition techniques include spin coating [ 7 ], dip coating [ 8 ], shear coating [ 9 , 10 ], and inkjet printing [ 11 ]. Because of the simplicity of the setup and flexibility of testing different parameters, as well as the potential to achieve high-performance organic FETs, shear coating is the most ubiquitously used technique within the research community.…”

“…This technique has been used to coat substrates with polymers, 105,[127][128][129] biomolecules, [130][131][132][133][134] and, most relevantly, colloidal solutions. 104,135,136 Typically, dip-coating is performed by submerging a substrate in a reservoir containing a coating suspension and then withdrawing it vertically at a known velocity.…”

“…Dip-coating has an intrinsic three-phase contact line (TPCL) that can easily modulate the assembly kinetics, , providing an optimal platform for the low-dimensional growth of OSCs. Until now, many ultrathin OSC films/microstructures have been realized with both small molecules and polymer semiconductors, ,,,, as presented in Figure . However, the assembly mechanism was rarely discussed systematically before.…”
