Unilateral Neglect and Functional Significance among Patients with Stroke

Abstract: This study was conducted to specify unilateral neglect with personal and extrapersonal neglect and relate them to, and compare their impact on, functional activities. AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of unilateral neglect on activities of daily living (ADL). Participating in the study were 46 right-brain stroke patients evaluated on the Klein-Bell ADL Scale, the Draw-A-Man-Test, the Random Chinese Word Cancellation Test, and physical variables. Based on the results of the Draw-A-… Show more

“…These clinical tests are limited to near space [46] and static visual stimuli [22] and they lose sensitivity for milder cases [47] with many of them being originally designed for visual attention and cognitive assessments rather than VSN [48]. Therefore it is essential to carry out a functional, task-specific assessment to appreciate the recovery achieved and the challenges faced by the individuals.…”

“…A lack of relationship was also observed between the participants’ performance on the laboratory tasks and clinical scores of VSN, which support previous observations that paper-pencil tests fail to predict performance on visually-guided functional tasks [ 21 , 23 ]. “…Alternatively, this subtype was also described by the impact on daily tasks ( n = 4), such as neglecting to dress the left side of the body. The descriptions of this subtype were not consistent across all the studies, with six studies attributing this subtype of neglect to another underlying disorder such as representational neglect (having a disrupted representation of the contralesional side of the body) ( 83 , 84 ), tactile (ignoring somatosensory stimuli) or motor neglect (underutilizing the contralesional side of the body) ( 84 , 85 ), a disorder of the body schema ( 86 , 87 ), or a disruption of the sense of ownership of the neglected side of the body ( 80 , 86 , 87 ).…”
