Universality of political corruption networks

Abstract: Corruption crimes demand highly coordinated actions among criminal agents to succeed. But research dedicated to corruption networks is still in its infancy and indeed little is known about the properties of these networks. Here we present a comprehensive investigation of corruption networks related to political scandals in Spain and Brazil over nearly three decades. We show that corruption networks of both countries share universal structural and dynamical properties, including similar degree distributions, cl… Show more

“…These results indicate that the structure of corruption networks is more redundant than the one observed for the criminal intelligence network. Indeed, corruption networks are formed by a set of complete graphs representing people involved in political scandals that are in turn connected with each other by the recidivism of a small number of agents 14 . In contrast, criminal intelligence networks can have more complex connectivity patterns that are uncovered by police investigations 15 .…”

“…13 and the Spanish data were obtained from Ref. 14 . In both networks, nodes represent people involved in political scandals and connections among them indicate individuals engaged at least once in the same corruption case.…”

“…Many researchers have applied the infectious disease dynamics model to analyze violence, corruption, and other social situations. Of those researchers, some applied mathematical modeling analysis on the dynamics of university student animosity towards mathematics with optimal control theory [24], some applied modeling for the dynamics of racism in cyberspace [25], and some applied modeling for violence [26][27][28], some applied modeling for the stability analysis of corruption [29], and others study universality of political corruption networks [30]. But, to the best of our knowledge, no one has developed and analyzed a mathematical model of the di usion of violence.…”
