Facing the challenges of the new industrial revolution, the deep coupling between universities and industry 4.0, the integration of information and communication technologies in education, and the enhancement of the ability to serve society on the basis of internal and external synergy should become the common choice of different types of universities. The university plays an important role in the n development in any advanced economy. In the age of knowledge and globalization rapid technological changes involve new disruptive processes. In this permanent challenge, it is necessary to adapt to the digital transformation, in order to better respond to the needs and challenges of a constantly changing environment. It is necessary to pay attention to technological advances, to a total transformation in the new university, University 4.0, In order to face the challenges of the technological development and the efficiency of universities in Morocco, it is necessary to introduce modern technologies, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, chatbots..... into the sphere of Moroccan universities.

Universities can contribute to economic and sustainable development (SD) in a variety of ways, such as mediating social debates, educating citizens on scientific and technical issues, fostering communication among various agents (politicians, businesspeople, higher education institutions’ managers, and citizens), and advancing socioeconomic progress. By teaching the current and next generations of decision-makers, universities have a role in “shaping the ideals of society”. Numerous publications address the topic of sustainable development, but they do so from the standpoint of how its responsibilities are implemented and how students are prepared and aware of it. This manuscript addresses this vacuum by looking at how students assess university activities and specific pillars of sustainable development, which is an unique approach. The investigation used the CAWI questionnaire. The sample consists of 115 Pakistani respondents, and information was gathered between February and August of 2022. The research built a logistic regression model. Our research’s findings and their analysis revealed that University 4.0s should take initiatives for sustainable development, and that these issues are top priorities for them. The analysis revealed that Society 5.0 is active in University 4.0s’ sustainable development initiatives, and that these initiatives are vital for Society 5.0.

University 4.0: Promoting the Transformation of Higher Education Institutions toward Sustainable Development

Higher education institutions (HEIs) could act as pivotal change agents for sustainable development (SD) in times of global climate action. However, HEIs have to respond to increasingly complex demands simultaneously, such as massification, globalization, marketization, and digitalization. Based on Graves’ model of systemic development, this paper discusses two main strategies to deal with increased complexity in order to meet the challenge of SD: (a) Promoting general systemic development of a given HEI, progressively opening up to various stakeholders and focusing on co-creative collaboration, and (b) participating in inter-organizational networks to find inspiration for dealing with challenging trends. Four distinct phases of higher education development are presented. It is argued that transdisciplinary research and research-based learning will increasingly be needed for tackling societal issues and that HEIs should address different organizational subsystems individually. Furthermore, four types of inter-organizational networks are proposed and implications for network management are discussed. A case study of the HOCH-N network illustrates the practical application of the presented ideas. Finally, adopting a multi-dimensional and networked organizational model as an integrative University 4.0 is argued to be suitable for increasing the capacity to deal with complexity, thus meeting the challenge of sustainable development.
