“…Research-oriented learning of firms in Kenya is another explorative OL link between IT-c and innovation performance. This indicates the role of research-related activities, and the fact that when added to the same equation as IT usage, the effect of research-related activities standouts compared to IT itself (Usai et al, 2021 ). In this context, IT is important, not in itself, but to the extent that it enables firms to improve research-related activities.…”

“…Whilst IT in itself does not constitute a source of competitive advantage for the firm, since it is readily available and easily acquired, its integration with OL capabilities such as routines and knowledge repositories accounts for the firm’s distinctiveness and improved performance, in contrast to other firms (Levallet & Chan, 2016 ; Tippins & Sohi, 2003 ). Usai et al ( 2021 ) analyse firm data across European countries and find that IT usage has little direct effect on innovation performance. They argue that the low direct effect is due to the ease of acquisition and replication which makes IT weak for competitive advantage of firms.…”

“…The digital revolution in the private sector, public institutions, and almost all industries has disrupted numerous markets, created new business opportunities, and fundamentally transformed business models ( Bresciani et al, 2021 ; Kraus et al, 2021 ). These phenomena have increased research efforts in various streams of the business literature, such as marketing ( Lamberton and Stephen, 2016 ; Kannan and Li, 2017 ), human resource management ( Blanka et al, 2022 ; Fossen and Sorgner, 2022 ), innovation and entrepreneurship ( Yoo et al, 2012 ; Nambisan et al, 2019 ; Usai et al, 2021 ), and business ethics and sustainability ( Illia et al, 2017 ; Cardinali and De Giovanni, 2022 ; Schiavone et al, 2022 ). However, additional exploration seems needed.…”

“…Digital technologies are not only a keystone for manufacturing firms' introduction of new services but also a catalyst for product innovation ( Blichfeldt & Faullant, 2021 ). Market uncertainty also increases the adoption of advanced technologies in the short term ( Prause, 2019 ), thus improving a firm's innovation performance ( Usai et al, 2021 ). Such technological investments create opportunities for firms to quickly adapt to the changes that have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic ( Paiola & Gebauer, 2020 ) and redesign the ways that they deliver their offerings ( Seetharaman, 2020 ).…”
