Utility of expectancy theory in predicting occupational choices in college students.

Abstract: Introductory psychology students responded to measures of Expectancy and Valence with respect to 6 male-dominated and 6 female-dominated careers. Likelihood of choosing each of the 12 occupations was used as an indicator offeree of behavior in Vroom's (1964) expectancy model. Results indicated that the Expectancy x Valence interaction for an occupation accounted for from 12% to 41% of the variance in tendency to choose that occupation, although expectancy alone was as good a predictor as the product. “…It has been well established that many college students encounter difficulties with life experiences and the decision-making of selecting an academic major (Theophilides, Terenzini, & Lorang, 1984;Kramer et al, 1994;Brooks & Bertz, 1990;Chickering & Reisser, 1993). Many students are undecided about their majors and careers and may change their academic majors numerous times while in college (Lennon, 2004;Titley & Titley, 1980;Porter & Umbach, 2006;Peterson, 2006;Gordon, 1984;Feldman, Smart, & Ethington, 2004).…”
