Utilization of partially hydrolysed starch in milk replacers by newborn lambs

Abstract: SummaryThree experiments were carried out to study the effect of replacing milk carbohydrates and part of the milk fat in milk with partially hydrolysed starch (Protamyl 110). Male and female cross-bred lambs (Suffolk × (Finnish Landrace × Dorset Horn)) were used in these experiments. They were weaned from their dams after having received colostrum at 1–2 days of age. The experimental diets were given at room temperature, in eight aliquots, at 3-h intervals through an automated feeding unit. The level of feedi… Show more

“…Regarding saturated FA, Soliman et al (1979) observed an average total content of 71.7% in Egyptian buffalo milk fat, a value resulted near to that reported by Oliveira et al, (2009) in their confined experiment (69.8%) but higher than the observed in the milk fat (56-59%) for the grazing buffaloes used in the present experiment. Polidori et al (1997) also reported that buffalo milk contains about 67% of saturated FA, while Van Nieuwenhove et al (2004) reported values of 59% for long-chain saturated FA in animals fed on natural pastures.…”

“…Milk whey powder was included in the two replacers to balance the other ingredients. In relation to the nutritional utilisation and the effects produced on the animals, the protein, fat and carbohydrate sources employed are considered adequate for pre-ruminant milk replacers (Soliman et al, 1979;Ørskov, 1982;Moulin, 1983). The concentrations to which the milk replacers were prepared, and their protein and fat contents, were those considered most appropriate for this type of animal, in accordance with their typical patterns of growth and development (Sanz Sampelayo et al, 1995, 1996.…”

“…To reduce bacterial growth and digestive disorders the replacers were acidified to 3 ml/l with lactic acid, as proposed by Havrevoll et al (1991). In relation to the nutritional utilization and the performance of animals, protein, fat and carbohydrate sources employed are considered adequate for pre-ruminant milk replacers (Soliman et al 1979;IZlrskov, 1982;Moulin, 1983). The ingredient composition of the diets and their gross energy concentration are shown in Table 1.…”
