Abstract: Previous research has demonstrated that the total replacement of corn oil (CO) with cottonseed oil (CSO) in the diets of growing male rats results in a lowering of the total cholesterol (TC) concentration in the serum. It is not, however, known if a partial replacement of dietary CO with CSO would be sufficient to lower TC levels, nor is the effect of replacing dietary CO with CSO on other indices of cholesterol status (e.g., the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], non-HDL-C [i.e., very-low… Show more

“…In the US, consumption of CSO ranks behind corn oil, soybean oil, and canola oil [6], but it is used in the manufacture of potato chips and baked goods and may be used in some margarines and salad dressings. Despite its common uses in food production, its role in lipid metabolism in humans remains largely unknown [7]. …”

“…Animal studies by Radcliffe and Narins [7,8] have indicated that replacement of corn oil with CSO for four weeks decreased total cholesterol along with HDL in rats. The lipid lowering effects of CSO are present in spite of its relatively high concentrations of saturated fatty acids compared to corn oil (26% saturated fat compared to 13%) and lower concentrations of monounsaturated fats (20% compared to 28%).…”

“…Previous findings suggest discrepancy role of oil and fat types in diet and their subsequent effects on plasma total cholesterol and its components (HDL and LDL) (Harris et al 2009;Eckel et al 2007;Fletcher et al 2005). Even though the conjoint uses of cottonseed oil in food making, their role in human lipid metabolism remains mainly unidentified (Radcliffe et al, 2001). According to Radcliffe and Czajka-Narins (2006) working on animals (rats) have showed that by changing of corn oil with CSO consecutive for four weeks reduced total cholesterol along with HDL levels.…”

“…Essa mudança no comportamento alimentar não foi significativa a ponto de interferir no ganho de peso final dos animais, em comparação ao grupo-controle. Resultados similares quanto ao ganho de peso foram encontrados para os animais submetidos à dieta com óleos de milho, algodão e suas respectivas misturas 19 também para o óleo de peixe 20 e óleo de soja 21 .…”
