Validation of a self-administered version of the Mediterranean diet scale (MDS) for cardiac rehabilitation patients in Canada

Abstract: The Mediterranean dietary pattern has been linked with lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and the Mediterranean diet scale (MDS) has been created to incorporate and test the inherent characteristics of this dietary pattern. This study aimed to psychometrically validate a self-administered version of the MDS in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients in Canada. To establish content validity, the scale was reviewed by an expert interdisciplinary panel. A final version of the tool was tested in 150 CR patient… Show more

“…Food intake was assessed by the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) tool [ 30 ], which consists of 13 questions on food consumption frequency and food intake habits considered characteristic of the Mediterranean diet. The total score ranges from 0 to 13; scores ≤ 5 are interpreted as low adherence to a MD and to ≥ 10 a high adherence to MD.…”

“…The MD is supported by evidence as being the healthiest diet worldwide to reduce the risk of CVD ( 41 , 42 ). The self-administered version of the MDS is a practical and useful screening tool, and it has been widely used internationally ( 21 , 23 ). This study aimed to translate and assess the validity of a newly created MDS-Chinese version with those in the general population with CVD or with risk of CVD.…”

“…The mean total score for the MDS-Chinese was 7.7 ± 2.4, which was lower than that for Canadians with CVD or risk of CVD (10.2 ± 1.9) ( 21 ), but the mean total score for the MDS-Chinese with diabetes mellitus (DM) (7.6 ± 2.3) was slightly higher than that found in Brazilian adults with DM (6.9 ± 2.0) ( 23 ). It may be because of the sampling difference, since the Canadian adult post CR may have improved adherence to healthy diet behaviors ( 43 ).…”
