Vanadium Oxide Sensing Layer Grown on Carbon Nanotubes by a New Atomic Layer Deposition Process

Abstract: A new atomic layer deposition (ALD) process was applied for the homogeneous coating of carbon nanotubes with vanadium oxide. It permits the coating of the inner and outer surface with a highly conformal film of controllable thickness and, hence, the production of high surface area hybrid materials at a so far unprecedented quality. The ALD-coated tubes are used as active component in gas-sensing devices. They show electric responses that are directly related to the peculiar structure, i.e., the p-n heterojunct… Show more

“…CNTs provide high surface area, then help the dispersion of the sensing materials on the nanotube walls (Figure 5a). The better performance of these hybrid sensors are also attributed to the effective electron transfer between the metal oxide particles and the highly conductive carbon nanotube network [42][43][44]. CNTs could also be coated with metal oxides of controlled thickness [45].…”

“…Similarly, composite vanadium oxide nanostructures have previously been synthesised for gas sensing, including vanadium oxide decorated CNTs 42 , VO2(B)@ZnO heterostructured nanorods 28 and V2O5 doped films 43 .…”

“…For example, Sakamoto fabricated VO x -SWCNT composites via a sol-gel method, which conductivity is three orders of magnitude higher than that of VO x [4]. Willinger inspected the V 2 O 4 -CNT composites by atomic layer deposition (ALD), finding that the response of the hybrid material toward NO 2 is enhanced after CNT addition [5]. Jampani improved the capacitance values of VO x from 700 Fg -1 to 1400 Fg -1 at a scan rate of 2 mVs -1 by deposit VO x onto CNTs through APCVD [6].…”
