VHP-Female full-body human CAD model for cross-platform FEM simulations — Recent development and validations

Abstract: Simulation of the electromagnetic response of the human body relies heavily upon efficient computational models or phantoms. The first objective of this paper is to present an improved platform-independent full-body electromagnetic computational model (computational phantom), the Visible Human Project® (VHP)-Female v. 3.1 and to describe its distinct features and enhancements compared to VHP-Female v. 2.0. The second objective is to report phantom simulation for electric stimulation studies using the commercia… Show more

“…SAR and device performance estimates are typically derived and accepted today from computational electromagnetics (CEM) simulations performed with detailed virtual humans [97]. In this study, we use the multi-tissue CEM phantom VHP-Female v. 5.0 (female/60 year/162 cm/88 kg, obese) [97][98][99][100][101][102][103] derived from the cryosection dataset archived within the Visible Human Project® of the US National Library of Medicine [104]. The phantom includes about 250 individual tissues and is augmented with material property values from the IT'IS database [105].…”

“…It was constructed from the photographic cryosection data of the Visible Human Project of the US National Library of Medicine with the world-best isotropic resolution of 0.33 mm. Its construction has been well documented in the literature [5][6][7][8][9][10], but several points are worth emphasizing here:…”

This tool partially described in Refs. [1][2][3][4] is a non-clinical assessment model used to predict the RF power deposition induced temperature rise near orthopedic implants as a function of implant geometry, location, material, and scan time. It is using the complete in silico multiphysics MRI environment and the anatomical human CAD model.
