Virtual Clocking for NanoMagnet Logic

Abstract: Among emerging technologies NanoMagnet Logic (NML) has recently received particular attention. NML uses magnets as constitutive elements, and this leads to logic circuits where there is no need of an external power supply to maintain their logic state. As a consequence, a system with intrinsic memory and zero stand-by power consumption can be envisioned. Despite the interesting nature of NML, a fundamental open problem still calls for a solution that could really boost NML technology: the clock system. It cons… Show more

“…The role of the clocking system is to properly control the switching of the nanomagnets in a circuit. The three-phase clocking system is the most commonly used method to control the switching of nanomagnets in NML circuits [18][19][20]. In this system, the NML circuit is subdivided into regions containing one or more nanomagnets, and each of these areas which is called a clock zone has a different clock signal.…”

“…In NMLD, unidirectional propagation of the data depends on dipole coupling effect between nanomagnets [8]. However, the dipole coupling effect is not enough to switch the magnetization of neighbouring nanomagnet due to the dipole-dipole interaction less than the shape anisotropy of the nanomagnet [9], [10]. In order to overcome the energy barrier between two steady magnetization states, we need an external energy apart from dipole-dipole interaction energy to hold the magnetization along short axis and drive the data transmission, which is termed as clocking [11].…”
