“…For future work, we believe that the combination of liquid culture of amoebae in microplates with one or more blind enrichment steps and the detection of amoebal lysis by an automated flow cytometer will be the best strategy for optimal high-throughput analysis. Conversely, the use of ethanol to decontaminate samples without killing viruses, especially mimiviruses, should be a suitable alternative to the use of antibiotics in situations where cultures need to be performed on non-axenic protozoa [22,23]. A unique proposed alternative was published in a report related to the isolation of Megavirus chilensis [24].…”

“…This technician habitually made an annual check of his serologies to the microbes he manipulated. Mimivirus is known for its extreme resistance to degradation by physical and chemical agents [70], and amoebae can also protect them from degradation [71,72]. The technician came for medical consultation with one of us (D.R.)…”

“…Considering the hypothetical role of APMV as pneumonia agent associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation the viral stability in ventilator devices was evaluated. Three different brands of sterile ventilator device (tube) (VD) were used to test APMV recovery (five quadrants of 2×2 cm per brand) [21]. In this case, 10 µl of viral suspension was added to VD quadrants with or without BAV, which were maintained in sterile Petri dishes.…”
