“…Sip et al (2006) found a positive correlation between ELISA values estimated in barley seedlings of the cross 'Igri' (ryd2) £ 'Atlas 68' (Ryd2) and the symptom level observed in Weld experiments, indicating that Ryd2 decreases viral reproduction in the plant at least in the seedling stage, and hence is a gene for resistance rather than tolerance. Furthermore, Larkin et al (1991) and Ranieri et al (1993) found a positive correlation between symptom expression and ELISA values, which was also more pronounced in younger plants, whereas Scheurer et al (2000) and Skaria et al (1985) found no relation between the virus titre and the level of tolerance. However, in these experiments the virus titre was measured in older plants.…”

“…Ryd2 has been reported to reduce the virus titre of BYDV-PAV and -MAV in young plants (Skaria et al 1985;Baltenberger et al 1987;Herrera and Plumb 1991;Ranieri et al 1993;Chalhoub et al 1994Chalhoub et al , 1995Sip et al 2006), but only to some isolates of CYDV-RPV (Banks et al 1992). However, no diVerences in the virus titre of plants carrying Ryd2 or ryd2, respectively concerning BYDV-PAV were observed in studies in which older plants were tested (Skaria et al 1985;Scheurer et al 2000). Besides this, diVerent alleles may be present at this locus (Catherall et al 1970;Chalhoub et al 1995).…”

“…Resistance in oats to BYDV appears to correlate with virus concentration (Hammond et al 1983, Skaria et al 1985, and breeders have used virus concentration as a selection criterium to improve the resistance of oat lines to BYDV. In this study, virus concentration was monitored by ELISA and using antiserum against an RPV isolate.…”

“…The results presented here further confirmed the ease of following the development of WSM symptoms in wheat-Thinopyrum amphiploids as well as their derivatives. Studies have demonstrated that symptom development was associated with a build up of the virus, in terms of ELISA color intensity as a measure of the serological quantification of viral protein (Jedlinski et al 1977;Skaria et al 1985;Ranieri et al 1993). However, a similar association could not be clearly drawn in a study involving wild wheat species (r 2 ¼ 0.262) (Stoddard et al 1987b).…”
