Knowledge management (KM) is the organization, creation, sharing and flow of knowledge within organizations. Knowledge can be shared and reused among involved engineers and experts to improve a construction process and reduce the time and cost of solving problems. This paper proposes a new and practical methodology to capture and represent construction project knowledge by using a Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach. Using BIM approach, users can make visual knowledge management in the 3D Computer-aided Design (CAD) environment. This study addresses the application of knowledge management in the construction phase of construction projects and proposes a Construction BIM-based Knowledge Management (CBIMKM) system for general contractors. The CBIMKM is then applied in selected case studies of a construction building project in Taiwan to verify our proposed methodology and demonstrate the effectiveness of sharing knowledge in the 3D environment. By applying the BIM approach, all participants in a project can share and reuse explicit and tacit knowledge through the 3D CAD-based knowledge map. The combined results demonstrate that the CBIMKM system can be used as a visual 3D-based knowledge management platform by utilizing the BIM approach and web technology.Keywords: construction knowledge management, BIM, building information modeling, project management, web-based information system. Many interface events and problems occur during the construction phase of construction projects, such that tracking and controlling these are essential to construction management. Interface management (IM) has become the most important aspect of a sound project management strategy. IM affects project cost, scheduling, and quality both directly and indirectly in construction projects. Interface or changed events can be identified and tracked using IM, such that construction processes can be improved, while minimizing rework and reducing total project duration. Despite the many studies and discussions in academic and practical literature, systematic approaches and information platforms for managing interface events and problems during the construction are lacking. This study tracks and manages interface events using novel three-dimensional (3D) interface maps integrated into the building information modelling (BIM) approach. The BIM approach, which is utilized to retain interface information in a digital format, facilitates easy interface updating and transfer in the 3D CAD environment. The 3D-based interface maps provide users with an overview of interface events during a given construction project, such that users can track and manage interfaces virtually. The primary purpose of this study is to develop a web Construction BIM-based IM (ConBIM-IM) system for engineers to enhance interface information sharing and efficiency tracking in construction projects. The ConBIM-IM system is applied to a case study of a building project in Taiwan to verify its efficacy and demonstrate its IM effectiveness. Case study results show that the ConBIM-IM system is effective for managing interfaces using the BIM approach in construction.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a revolutionary invention within the construction industry that essentially aids the design, construction and management of construction projects throughout their lifespan. Globally, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry has for decades progressively adopted and implemented BIM. While there are several papers in this context, none have tried to extensively document BIM’s comprehensive contributions and uses in the construction phase. Therefore, this paper aims to identify BIM’s various contributions and uses in the construction phase and analyze publication trends, co-occurring keywords, contributing authors and countries. A systematic overview approach was used to review published articles on state-of-the-art of BIM in construction, supported by bibliometric network mapping analysis. A total of 409 documents were extracted and analyzed. The study’s findings document BIM’s various uses and contributions to the AEC industry, such as simulation of each stage of the construction process, virtual presentation of the building and site, visualization of progress, management of construction work, enhancement of safety, communication and collaboration, quick generation of reliable and accurate cost estimates, assistance in the fast realization of return on investment (ROI), and serving as a platform that hosts and documents various technological tools used during the construction phase. The bibliometric analysis reveals the most contributing scholars, countries, document sources, trend network mapping of co-occurring keywords, and publication trends. The primary practical implications of this study’s discoveries can be exploited as a basis for further research and to influence the future direction of BIM in the AEC industry. The findings will enhance the wider spread, application and understanding of BIM in the AEC industry, thereby increasing BIM awareness and knowledge globally.
