Volumetric assessment of myocardial viability in rats using 3D double contrast enhanced T1 and T2-weighted MRI

Abstract: The use of 3D T1- and T2-weighted MR Imaging using a double contrast agents protocol made possible the accurate characterization of myocardial infarction volume and allowed the detection of myocardial viability post-infarction in rats.

“…However, it is still difficult to distinguish the cartilage from the joint fluid because the injection of a contrast agent into the joint cavity enhances both the cartilage and fluid that fills the joint. Among the various agents that have been used, double‐contrast agents consisting of both positive and negative components are of promise for MR imaging. Double‐contrast MRI techniques have been reported in the field of gastroenterology to facilitate clear MR imaging of thin inflammatory or cancerous tissues.…”

“…These techniques use a locally administered superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) before the systemic administration of gadolinium agents . In circulatory system imaging, similar techniques have been applied to detect myocardial infarction and catheter migration . We hypothesized that Mineric®, a standard trace element replenisher that is already used in clinical practice, could be a promising candidate as a double‐contrast agent to enhance the MR imaging of articular cartilage because it contains both manganese and colloidal iron.…”
