Water-Mediated Mars–Van Krevelen Mechanism for CO Oxidation on Ceria-Supported Single-Atom Pt1 Catalyst

Abstract: In water-promoted CO oxidation, water was thought not to directly participate in CO 2 production. Here we report that via a water-mediated Mars−van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism, water can directly contribute to about 50% of CO 2 production on a single-atom Pt 1 /CeO 2 catalyst. The origin is the facile reaction of CO with the hydroxyl from dissociated water to yield the carboxyl intermediate, which dehydrogenates subsequently with the help of a lattice hydroxyl to generate CO 2 and water. The water-mediated MvK ty… Show more

“…RHE). This phenomenon is similar to the previously reported description that water was molecularly adsorbed on CeO x to form Ce(OH) 3 and OH − groups facilitated the oxidation of CO to CO 2 . Also, the adsorbed CO species can be further oxidized by the lattice oxygen of CeO x as evidenced by CO stripping voltammetry curves of C/PBI/CeO x in Figure d.…”

“…[96] Theoccurrence of accessibility constraints because of diffusion of the Pt species into the CeO 2 lattice was excluded by the similar activity in comparison to Pt 1 /Al 2 O 3 .N onetheless, embedding in the support has been identified as the main mechanism of activity losses in other systems. “…By controlling this ALD process, one can easily control the formation of single metal centers on the support under high‐vacuum condition. Up to now, many single atom metals, such as Pt and Pd, have been deposited on various substrates via the ALD method . Another powerful technique to precisely control atom number in metal cluster is the mass‐selected soft‐landing method, which can be used for the synthesis of single metal atom catalysts.…”
