Water Quality of a Reservoir and Its Major Tributary Located in East-Central Mexico

Abstract: A reservoir with ecological and economic importance and its major tributary, localized in east-central Mexico, were studied. The aim of this work was to know the physicochemical water characteristics of both water bodies and to contrast these by their different uses, and also estimate overall water quality using a Water Quality Index (WQI). Water samples from the reservoir and the tributary were obtained in different climatic seasons. In the tributary, anoxic and hypoxic conditions and high levels of organic m… Show more

“…Mexico faces a serious infelicity in that much of its population (in the Northeast, for instance) is clustered in areas that have little in the way of indigenous water (National Water Commission, 2015). And other evidence from the past few years plainly reveals a steady decline in the water infrastructure of Mexico since the dawn of the 2000s (Castilla-Hernández et al , 2014). Thus, what becomes manifest is that poor managerial practices have been married to declining physical infrastructures for some time, thus aggravating the existing condition to an extent that can only be viewed with alarm (Aguilar-Barajas et al , 2015).…”

“…Drinking water quality index (DWQI) presents a single number to reveal the overall water quality at a particular position and time, based on various water quality factors. It is interpreted as a number that indicates the combined impact of several water quality parameters [ 19 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. DWQI has been popularly utilized in water quality evaluations for both surface and sub-surface water, and it has represented an increasingly significant function in the water resource environment and management [ 29 , 30 , 31 ].…”

“…Density currents are divided into sediment density currents, salinity density currents, and temperature density currents [25]. Sediment density currents and temperature density currents are common in source water reservoirs, with the former carrying serious exogenous pollution [26,27].…”
